Maker of the month · Kuala Krai, Kelantan
Mak Som started frying sambal for the Friday market in Kuala Krai in 1994. She still uses the same kawah, a black iron wok wider than her arms, over a wood fire behind the house.
One batch takes six hours. The chillies are soaked overnight, pounded, then fried with shallots and anchovies until the oil turns dark red and the bilis snap. Fauzi now does the stirring. Mak Som does the tasting.

Most makers cook in small batches once a week. We collect on their batch day and pack every Friday, so a sambal is usually less than a week old when it leaves us. Every jar has its batch number and the date it was made.
RM8 flat to West Malaysia and RM15 to Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan. Free over RM120. Most orders arrive in 1 to 4 working days in the Peninsula and 4 to 6 days in East Malaysia.
All food makers use halal-certified ingredients, and 9 of our 10 food makers hold their own halal certificate. Each product page says which. Craft items are not food and are not certified.
Not yet from this shop. Dry goods (kopi, gula apong, crunch, tea, craft) can go to Singapore and Brunei on request. Sambal and honey stay in Malaysia for now.
Send us a photo within 3 days and we send a new one with the next Friday packing. No forms, no arguing.
Makers set their own price. We add our margin on top and show both on every product page, under Where your money goes. On a RM18.90 sambal, RM12.30 goes to Mak Som.
